[ARCHIVED] Water Quality Scam Alert

water drop forms on a faucet

The city urges residents to be aware of solicitors going door-to-door in Poway neighborhoods making claims about the city’s water quality and offering a water filtration system solution.  This is a known scam in which workers claiming to represent the local water agency will request entry to homes to test water quality or make a sales pitch about their water filtration system.

Drinking water provided by the City of Poway meets or exceeds all state and federal water quality standards for your drinking water. We conduct approximately 65,000 tests annually on the drinking water quality; many of the tests go beyond what is required by regulations.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind if you receive a visit from someone claiming they are representing the city regarding water quality:

  • Always ask to see identification. In a situation in which a Poway utilities worker was in the field following up on a water quality concern, the staff member would provide you with a City of Poway ID and arrive in a City of Poway marked vehicle.
  • Don’t hesitate to verify. We welcome your call to verify a city worker is at your home, as it safeguards our residents from falling victim to a scam. Call 858-668-4700 during business hours or 858-668-4751 (water treatment plant) during non-business hours.

The City of Poway is not responsible for water testing or repairs inside private homes and rarely has reason to ask for entry. Residents are urged to turn away anyone claiming to be with the city’s water division or soliciting on their behalf, especially if they approach you without an appointment, request access to your home, or seek information or payment.
